Life as a spectrum

A 'big umbrella definition' of life, or at least life-like processes from Dave Ackley*:

"Dynamically preserved patterns"

Ukiyo-e depiction by Hiroshige of kami relocation ritual during the Sengu process of rebuilding at Ise Shrine. Buildings at the shrine complex are rebuilt about every 20 years.

*Ackley goes on to describe what he calls the Weak Claim, that alife produces models of living systems (emphasis on making and testing hypotheses about LAWKI), and the Strong Claim, that computational (or built) systems can be considered to actually be, to some degree, alive.
